I have a (hopefully non-spoiler) question:
Why does the A.I. think of Dude as an enemy, too? I don’t remember him doing anything to Kat aside from some verbal jabs. Kat even tried to make a plan with him once. Also Dude killed Jane when she attacked Kat during that fight starting at page 738:

That should’ve given him some major browny points.

Is this a “the friend of my enemy is my enemy no matter what they do” thing?

Btw: Is it Deselion or Deselione? Because IIRC page 734 is the only page where I read the former, while the latter is e.g. on page 487.

Thus I shall assume that Bandit is doing it on purpose, i.e. he’s lying, because a genius doesn’t make a mistake like that.

Bandit has killed both Kat and Dani. That’s why they didn’t have Esones when they got to this island.

I don’t think Bandit is any kind of genius. I think he’s smart, and has insider information on both the company and Kat, as well as extensive game knowledge, including the AIs used. (He might have even helped program them.)

As far as the genius thing goes:
Keiko’s parents were super picky as to who would be smart enough to be allowed to play with her and Bandit finally fulfilled the criteria. So, he is a genius. He’s likely not a jack-of-all-trades-genius, but he does have a high IQ.

There’s a possibility he might not be thinking entirely rationally about the matter. That’s a thing that often screws up normally smart people’s plans – they aren’t immune to prejudice or trauma.

Yes, that possibility exists indeed.

Granted I didn’t explicitly buy reserves, either, I just ended up with extras when I bought RSI-friendly ones, so I would’ve had the same problem as well had they malfunctioned.

Yeah… I have a nice gaming keyboard. Decent ghosting and sh**. Then I got a cat who insists on laying on my desk next to the keyboard. Here I am now using my old tiny Logitech k360.. Where hitting shift w and e wont work cause too many keys pressed at once.

I’m still curious what makes Bandit so sure it’s still the A.I. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the others don’t bother to question it, but for all I know, he might be lying about that.

Danni’s still less likely to be heavily attacked than the rest of the team.

The A.I.’s just the worst case scenario, which Danni is still the best option of contact.

“lying”? Maybe, maybe not. He might simply be presuming at this point.

Either way, I doubt it’s the AI that was supposed to be there. I still believe that it’s D or a subroutine of D’s. (I actually highly doubt that it’s D directly, but I could see it being a piece-bit-part-subroutine-etc…)

Bandit can see the underlying code. So he can see that the game is auto-playing Kat’s character.

We readers believe him because of the personality change. But it could be a trick, yes.

Are they still on the Morto island? Kat is carrying a bunch of esones from Kesti for Danni, right? Wouldn’t Kat!AI be in Kesti mode? (Delivering esones to Danni sounds like a quest to me… though the system probably doesn’t count it that way.)

(After she tied him up because he planned to ruin her 100% score, he shot at her and Danni/Dude – she jumped to save Danni and nearly dies then he shoots again to kill her (cuz if she keeps her perfect record then her cover is blown) and Danni saves Kat from herself, without knowing it, by jumping to take her out of the way but they both die from the blast… perfect record ruined – therefore not the hacker. The dude lives from being pushed out by Danni.

This does however show that bandit is lying to get Danni up front… for whatever reason.

I'm thinking only Bandit and Jane are seen as evil. I hope cat comes back, they might die before the PKers get them.

I’m not sure Bandit is lying; he’s been basically upstanding for the entire present of the story. But if he is I can think of two reasons:

* Out of friendship to Dude, because Dude is a coward with a partly irrational fear of Kat;
* To politically align Dude more firmly to himself, but that seems unnecessary and fairly pointless.
