Please note: NAV is updating only on Tuesdays until the end of June.

Let's just avoid the whole "real name" part.

“Also, don’t tell her I know she knows, or then she’ll know that I know that she knows that I know who she is.”

~~~
To be fair to Danni, Paddy thought Danni was being a honouring fan, not Danni herself – thinking that Danni herself was dead, but he couldn’t miss her performance choice.
Wasn’t she also using her IRL name, or something close to it?
Alexander The 1st on 03/01/2019 @ 3:35 pm
She’s using her IRL first name, but again – if you thought she was dead, you’d expect it was intended as a tribute.
Like if I used a username for “Alexander the Great” – you’d presume I was referencing the dead guy who had that title, not that I would actually be that person myself.
Or more contemporary – Paddy thought Danni was like an Elvis Impersonator, not Elvis Presley.
And now you know she knows you know. And she knows you know she knows you know.
I probably would have said something like “Kat had a bad run-in with the hacker hunts, and she’s terrified of being recognized. If you can’t stop her now, she will disappear forever.”
anony anon on 02/26/2019 @ 7:26 pm
That’s pretty much what I would have said. Danni’s previous experience with hackers is bad. Now he’s painted himself into a corner where she will say “but she didn’t do ANYTHING” and he will say “she hacked the server so you would dodge it” and Danni will have an existential crisis where she learns that her friend is a hacker. Telling her Kat has reason to be afraid of the hacker hunts would have been entirely truthful, and touches on things she already knows about Kat.
AmbiguousMouse on 02/26/2019 @ 8:25 pm
That could be a great idea for someone else, but Bandit is a known member of Tenka, as established back in his introduction. If he says she’s running because she’s afraid of being caught by hacker hunters, well, Danni will probably respond with “YOU’RE one of the people involved with hacker hunting, so clearly you’re who I’ve got to keep her safe from.” Or something like that, anyway.
But it was mentioned earlier in the comic that programmers (people who could make machines work) got caught up in the search for hackers. If he tells her Kat is a programmer, and he understands completely why she’s scared of him because she thinks he thinks she’s a hacker, that’s something Danni can understand.
yea, I think this is where it should head.
I also think this is more the truth to the matter, as well. we all know her as the cyborg is being blamed for satarting the apocalypse in motion. but even if we where to say she did accidentally set off an chain reaction that went way way further then planned. considering her mentality back then was more I want to win I want spotlight, i want people telling me how good i am. It’s unlikely she’d be sneaking into any system that wouldn’t benefit her directly, as it’s a waste of time, when she could be doing things to get herself more praise and feed her ego. And since the game was how she’d do that she’d be focusing more of her efforts around that. unless her frequent manipulation of that system and possibly other public facing systems to gain her more praise. instead got her marked as a big threat when the hacker hunts arrived and now she had to take more and more drastic measures to keep herself safe as the hunts where intensifying. but because of her need to be praised her need to be the star of a show she couldn’t stand staying out of sight for to long. which lead to a more or less arms race with them trying to get to her and her trying to make it difficult, which could of ended up with her out of desperation messing with the wrong system.
I think Bandit is handling this exactly correctly. He is being very honest, without trying to mislead Danni, while also trying not to reveal who Kat really is. Since he wants Danni to talk to Kat, he has to make sure that what she reports of this conversation does not make it seem like Bandit said more than Kat would want, but also shows that he isn’t just trying to use his silver tongue to convince her, but is instead trying to be honest with her.
This should make Kat more likely to trust that he won’t say anything to anybody at Tenka, especially if Danni mentions that he believed it was her since the Death Match, and she hasn’t been harassed for quite a while. If Danni also mentions that his killing Kat was to try to keep her alive, then Kat might even figure out that he has intentionally been trying to mislead people about who she really is.
Hmm, not a bad way to say it without mentioning the hacker part. Hopefully Danni doesn’t realize the only thing to provoke such reaction from Kat without her being able to see anything, must be hacking.
Good to know Danni has never had a best friend, makes her more likely to side with Kat if the truth is found. 🙂
anony anon on 02/27/2019 @ 3:40 pm
It is a terrible way to not mention hacking. Danni is about to ask him what Kat did to allow him to confirm who she is with the dance scenario, when as far as Danni knows, Kat didn’t do anything.
Alexander The 1st on 03/01/2019 @ 4:20 pm
Hopefully Jake is thinking ahead and ready to respond with “It’s how she initiates her log out. It’s subtle, but it’s slightly different than how everyone else logs out, like this. *Slightly different log out command* Wait – I didn’t think this throooouuuuughhhhh!”
Liliet on 03/01/2019 @ 3:37 am
Agreed.
