And the ONE time Dude is being told to run he is SO not going to do it. 😀

Also if he WERE to run I would cue the Benny Hill theme instead. I so want to see Dude pull a Charlie Chaplin on the whole gang of Snowman:

I really really hope this is the moment we see Dude show himself as a bad*ss beneath all the tomfoolery and goofiness.

He is going to have to run from that barrage. Will we get to see his special?

Y’know, it occurs to me that this is a terrible plan. If there’s no recording or livestream being made, sure nobody can see who did it. Supposedly.
But it also means that Tenka can just reinsert Bandit/Dude if they die because nobody (from the public) saw them die – it’s not as though Tenka isn’t going to cut short this session after the feeds cut out, so their being dead won’t get out, unless they talk about it or the perpetrators do, exposing themselves.

Yeah, the premise is highly questionable. Aneeka is treating the Game more like an ‘astral space’ that exists by its own rules than a digital construct clay in the hands of administrators.

What does it even mean that the cameras cut out? Like, how are they all not offline then?

(I’m not exactly complaining, mind)

Well think of it like this: Even nowadays people can records themselves and others playing games. But if they suddenly stop filming that doesn’t mean the person stops playing.

Liliet on 05/06/2020 @ 3:03 am

This isn’t an offline game, it’s an online one. Okay, let’s say just the recording stopped – why can’t they just log out then?

Keep in mind that these admins have to deal with The Virus, which probably doesn’t like them messing around with Keiko’s code too much. They may factually have some limits that normal admins wouldn’t. Also, the people making these plans may just not be making good decisions – it’s possible that this IS a terrible idea, and they just don’t realize/won’t admit it. Bad decision making is a realistic portrayal of highly stressed human beings!

Well, this isn’t the first medium by far where I’ve seen programming not being treated accurately. Take The Matrix for example or Tron. There’s also .hack//sign where the character is trapped in the game and can’t log out. Or Overlord.
And there’s a reason why that parody “Kung Fury” has a character who can “hack time”. Media are all over the place regarding what code can do.

I’ve long since given up trying view media that use code from a programmer’s perspective.
E.g. why did Jane’s dolls stop working? It could be that the Game updated and isn’t backwards compatible or it could be that the Game is more restrictive than the tournament (which is why Kat could make the Nice Special) or the code could be “leaking” (a word Kat used to describe an opponent’s code, saying that it had a lot of weaknesses) and now it has run dry. 🙂

VoxelLibrary on 04/29/2020 @ 8:07 pm

Jane’s special stopped working because Kat accidentally attacked it.

That’s an interesting interpretation of that page. I just assumed that she created that image of Jane herself, because Jane would have had no reason to tell her that she’s “no longer” the best. But if her emotions can create visions like that, who knows what else she connected those strands of code with.

It would’ve been hacking, though, and Jane should’ve seen the obvious gaping hole in her code. And when Jane threw the dolls at Kat, I would’ve expected Kat to have some kind of reaction, realizing that she had destroyed the dolls herself.

So I’m not entirely sold on the idea, but I’m not ruling it out, either.

That assumes the Game will LET Tenka make those kinds of changes. I’ve gotten the impression that Tenka has far less control inside the Game than the public would assume, because of D. Tenka has the real-world resources to support competition teams and coders where the average city does not, so they have the appearance of being in control when they really… aren’t.

I think the general idea is that they’re hoping to be done and then have the streams turn back on with Bandit taken out – not only is Tenka basically going to walk right into broadcasting his death with no known source (But hey, that area’s got to be considered dangerous, right? Otherwise, everyone’s going to use this route.), but it’ll also tank Bandit’s popularity. The Bandit lost to something off-screen? “We didn’t even get to see that fight!”.

*Cue the Dude screaming*

I agree, taking out the sound effect was a good idea. -At most- I’d use something short and simple like “…thunk…”. Good thinking, Aneeka.
