Okay. The last page makes a lot more sense now.

This page raises a couple of questions though:

1. Why was the Erbana island locked off (knowing that the Mani island was not)?

2. Why was the Mani island not locked off (knowing that the Erbana island was)?

I would assume that the Demoli island was locked off; was it? Are there any other islands that been locked off?

dsollen on 01/21/2020 @ 10:17 am

For your first question I suspect the Erbana island is locked off because of D.

I’m working on the assumption the Erbana island is the one created by Kat’s mother, just like Mani was created by her father. We all know how defensive Kat is of her mother, so she may be a bit touchy about people on the Island. This is a problem when she also has D around to attack people who do things she is touchy about.

From context it sounds like they decided to prevent anyone from going to the island of Kat’s mother because they were afraid that it would lead to D attacking them, or something worse. Previous comics have implied that they are well aware that D is sensitive about things associated with Kat’s mother, they were even afraid of Kat going Erbana for that reason if I recall correctly. Specifically He says that they restricted access just for fear something would happen, without knowing rather or not it would set off Kat/D.

Here they hypothesis someone must have traveled to the island already, because why else would they have set up this hub world? If so that implies that D may allow access to the island after all.

Yeah, my understanding is they’re so paranoid, they won’t even sat her name – I’d have to archive dive to find the specifc quote, but I think Kim lets slip it starts with “Chi” before cutting herself off and saying “Her mother”.

Stacts on 01/22/2020 @ 6:16 pm

Okay. But how did they decide that her mother’s island was dangerous but not decide that her father’s island was dangerous? How did they make that decision? Why was one deemed more dangerous than the other? Why was one deemed less dangerous than the other?

GLJordan on 01/22/2020 @ 8:28 pm

I suspect it has to do with Keiko and her reaction to losing her mother which she blames herself for.

dsollen on 01/23/2020 @ 9:03 am

Throughout the comic Kat has been very sensitive about her mother, less so her father. Her mother died in some circumstance that may or may not have been Kat’s direct fault, but obiously others (and possibly kat herself) blame Kat for. I think it’s safe to say Kat’s mother is a soft spot to her, more so then her father. If anything, kat may blame her father for encouraging the grey hat hacker-without-a-cause mindset that lead to …whatever happened that triggered the hacker hunts and associated ‘fun’.

I suspect as a result of her sensitivity about her mother she set up D to defend things associated with her mother, either intentionally or another example of D being preemptively ‘helpful’ for Kat, like how he constantly recommends hacks to Kat when she is trying not to use them. Regardless I suspect that D has caused legitimate trouble for other’s when they did things associated with Kat’s mother, but not caused trouble when they did stuff associated with her dad. Thus her mom is the one they decided must be off limits because that’s what Kat/D seem to care about. Her dad doesn’t seem to pose the same threat.

Though, come to think of it, I wonder if it was a coincidence that they ended up on the Dad’s island. Maybe some high ups still suspected Kat’s real identity and picked the island specifically for her?

Alexander The 1st on 01/23/2020 @ 12:56 pm

I suspect part of it also part of them trying to claim “Erbanas are bland, nobody likes watching them”.

Low level Erbanas or aspiring Erbanas might try to go to the “Peaceful” island not expecting a lot of resistance.

That’s not try of Mani, which is an outright villain alignment. You go there *expecting* conflict.

I knew Kat lost her Esone, but I didn’t realize Danni and Jane did too.

SeveredNed on 01/22/2020 @ 12:13 am

Danni lost hers when she dived in front of the fireball for Kat. Which is what the AI is saying needs to be repaid.
Jane lost hers when The Dude tackled her in the fight they just had.

And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you Esone?

(with apologies to Heart)

Meerling on 01/21/2020 @ 1:57 pm

“Ironically, out of their group, these two are the only ones that even have an Esone now.”

Right, and just which person named Bandit was the cause of that problem?

Ok, Bandit wasn’t responsible for Jane getting squashed, but still…

Also, I wonder why Jane went all psycho at just that point. I wonder if she realized something and it was an intentional plan and not just going psycho, possibly even getting killed as well.
Maybe it has something to do with the Esone limit, or it’s one of those situations where you can only go somewhere or see something if you are in spirit/ghost mode. (There are several things in World of Warcraft like that. NPCs and places.)
After all, Jane has a definite agenda, and isn’t stupid.

Atros on 01/21/2020 @ 2:55 pm

My current thought is she wanted to stop them from discovering exactly what they just did discover. Tenka clearly doesn’t have full control over the game, if entire alignment-themed-caves exist without their knowing, with players going places and doing things without their knowledge. She wants the Game dead and is anti-Tenka as h***, so seems likely to be part of the outsiders resistance group, whatever they call themselves. If AI-Kat had run another way, she could have prevented this entire chain of events and the discovery of what exactly the cave was. I don’t think she expected Dude of all people to take her out and has firmly lost control of events. She never wanted to take that portal to begin with, remember.

Reads very well to me, Aneeka! Good job!

Dukk on 01/22/2020 @ 11:20 am

Man, I enjoy this comic but I’m so glad you guys are all smarter than me and have been able to keep up better. I get h*lla lost sometimes, and I’ve read through this comic twice now.

DragonMaster on 01/22/2020 @ 2:01 pm

You know if Jane was kicked out and required to make a new character for killing her teammates, how come Bandit didn’t get in trouble for doing the same thing? Is it because he’s a Citizen and a highly popular TENka person?

Stacts on 01/22/2020 @ 6:13 pm

That wasn’t why Jane was kicked out. Her popularity was too low. Killing the teammates was just a coincidence.

I can’t remember where that was explained.

I love the Dude and Bandits interactions! But I am also freaking dying for Kleya and Bandit to talk. Or for us at least to see what she is up to. I like our snarky protagonist and I miss her.

cowboyken on 01/23/2020 @ 7:44 pm

nooooo i caught up now i have to wait again 🙁

Bwilla on 01/24/2020 @ 1:00 am

I know!!!! This story is so good so like… I’m willing to wait it just kinda sucks.

RowenMorland on 01/25/2020 @ 5:38 am

Reading around GLJordan’s archive link reminds me that Kat’s old character is still around on automatic. I wonder if it guards that particular island.

Bwilla on 01/26/2020 @ 10:15 pm

That would be so cool! I hope so
