Ooh, nice bait and switch. “Oh, we’re getting more backstory on the Dude.” Nope, it’s Danni. Is she going to open up to Bandit? Chances are she might, because Kleya isn’t there. Which will make Kleya even more pissed of Bandit and make herself feel worse for not benig there for Danni. It’s stupid teen drama, but by G-d, we live for it.

Glad to see you’re ready to get in the grind again. Hope things all go well.

I thought Dani was hurt in the DM world ending event. So apparently she was injured before that? Interesting.

Heeeey! Does this update indicate that you’re still steadily regaining yourself? Either way, YAY UPDATE!

I think the problem with that presumption before is that her fans didn’t know what had happened to Danni – and given the coverage of the DM incidents, it seems likely that Dani’s career taking a dive because of the DM incident would be pretty high on the coverage tier.

She “Just suddenly retired” as far as they knew.

As far as I remember, Danni was on life support, but I don’t think it was ever said if it was from before the DM incident or not. I thought it was from the DM incident. This implies it was before the DM incident, which is why she doesn’t know a lot about it. I wonder if Kat was thinking the same as I did, that the DM incident caused Danni’s injuries. Will be interesting to see what happened to Danni and how the others deal with it.

I think I recall Danni mentioning an accident. I was initially imagining a broken leg, or something like that. But it was obviously much more serious than that.

Have to do an Archive Binge to see if I can find it.

That said, yeah – glad that we got an update.

Panel 3 is very well done, has an overture that gets the point across and the subtle silhouette helps remind us of her situation, both now and then.

Bandit: “The world was ending!”

As much as I live for Bandit/Kat drama, I think Danni is my favorite ^_^

Yeah that’s the thing Dude. THe world was ending. This tends to not leave a whole lot of room to check the d*** news if you are one of the people caught on the ground when the s*** hits the fan.

Also, I don’t think her medical issues were directly related to that stuff. When the world ended I think she was already in a paralyzed coma situation thing.

December 1999 was when the Y2K bug could crash computers all around the world, due to early coders not realizing that some of them would still be in use when 2000 came around; if their programs read the year-date as “00” (a 2 digit number) sometimes reset those computers, and the systems would crash whatever they were attached to. But it wasn’t always easy to know what had the 2 digit year value AND whether or not that bit of code WOULD crash the systems.

My mother worked at Boeing at the time (back when it wasn’t a POS company; the merger with McDonald-Douglas did not go well, internally), and she had to be on hand for her department as one of the computer support folks to make sure the coders had kept up with updates and that their systems did not crash. This was “merely” overseeing work on the factory floor, but if it got screwed up, they could be days, weeks, even months behind.

My father originally wanted to be there to support her, to ring in the new year with her. Unfortunately, he wound up in the Critical Care Unit (far more serious than the Intensive Care Unit) a few weeks before, and wound up staying in the CCU all the way into the new year. When he could finally think and communicate again, he didn’t know that it was the year 2000, and one of the first things he wanted to ask after finding out it was January 6th was how the Y2K watch had gone. My mother had gone in to work over New Year’s Eve specifically to keep an eye on things and he was worried that she’d suffered not being with loved ones. (She did, however, get helluva good overtime/holiday pay, at least!).

When you are seriously ill, you might not even *remember* what is gonig on, because your entire existence condenses down into absolute misery, and your life becomes a very long slog of endurance.

Right now, my sis is missing out on a lot of things, because she badly broke her leg, and her other health conditions are keeping her in the hospital. They’re hoping to get her into a rehab center soon, but she’s missing a bunch of things, and she’ll most definitely still be in hospital or in rehab when her birthday comes up later this month. She can’t even get to her cellphone over half the time, she’s so tired and suffering from so much pain (complications, as I said), there’s no point in even trying to answer the thing most of the time, so she’s turned off most of her notifications and only answers the special ringer she’s set up for family.

There is nothing wrong with being so out of it that you don’t know anything. There is nothing wrong with focusing down only on your own health problems, in an attempt to get them to heal. And there is nothing wrong with being in a position where you just *cannot* get news in a timely manner. Life happens. Horrible sucky things happen. And some people just…miss…the end of the whole world, because their *own* world has ended.

Oof.

I was in high school in the early 80s, and we knew about the Y2k bug even back then. Heck, one of my semester projects of senior year was writing a patch for the database program we used at school to automatically update all 2 digit DATE fields to 4 digit ones with 19?? dates. (If it already had a 4 digit date, it did nothing to it)
Also made a separate program to go through unopened databases and do the same to them.

Most things that had computer chips in the late 90s and early 2000s, and even now, don’t even know what year it is because it has nothing at all to do with their functionality.
The big media scare was just a lot of hype over nothing. (After all, if high school kids in the early 80s knew about it and were already fixing it, any competent company would already have it dealt with long before 2000 rolled around.)

And I totally agree, when sick, especially if in the hospital and not awake most of the time, you have no idea what’s going on in the world, or even anything outside your room. I got hurt when I was in the military, and was in the base hospital for about 2 months, and it would have been 2 more except a very good friend that worked there, and his wife that was studying to be a Registered Nurse, talked the docs into letting them take me to their place for that time. (They saved what I laughingly call my sanity with that!)

Ah, but you forget the bureaucratic mind. Managers would look at Y2K, realize that it would not be on their watch and kick the can down the road. So in the mid to late 90s, a LOT of companies were scrambling for programmers for their older systems to get ready. The media did hype it up in the last year, but many businesses waited to the last minute to fix things. I worked at a large telecom company for businesses and they laid off the programmer than knew the ticketing and other systems. Then they had to hire him back as a consultant, at a much higher fee, to fix the system in the later half of the 90s.

I’ve heard several claims that the Y2K bug really WOULD have been a problem for a lot of systems, but BECAUSE a lot of people raised awareness about the concern, the programmers responsible for those systems had time to investigate and to preemptively implement fixes, which prevented major problems from occurring. So unfortunately, this led to the misconception that there was never really anything to worry about, when instead it was just a successfully-heeded warning; or a self-defeating prophecy, if you will.

I think an appropriate comeback would be along the lines of “Unconscious in a hospital bed overrules news”

I’d phrase it as “I was a vegetable. Still am.”. Somehow, I don’t think that’s danni’s style.

Sorry Bandit, but personal crises can and do usually overrule global crises, unless they are both one and the same.

I was coding fixes for Y2K. Factory floor, each and every machine had to be investigated and evaluated. If the bug brought the line down tons of silicon could be ruined. Worked our butts off leading up to the date. I was on call over the new years looking for problems and we passed through with no issue.
The next morning we found a problem. None of the doors would unlock. A security system (I was not allowed to look at) had the bug. None of the mag card locks would work.
So for a couple days we kept the doors open with a brick and made sure none of the Fabs were ever totally empty.

“I’m sorry that my near-death experience back then conflicts with your expectations for me.”
“I’m still comatose btw, but by all means, let’s talk about -your- problems.”

Missed the poll a few months back, but definitely, go at your own pace. Slow progress is still progress, and I’m so happy to see this comic back, and that you’re back to trying to march along with the passage of time after a (very understandable) pause.

I just found out about a VTuber called Ironmouse who is bedridden as a result of a health condition but is still a successful streamer; reminds me of Danni a bit, particularly what she’s sort of looking to do with the Game here, to make a living through entertainment using a virtual avatar.

So, panel 3… there was some delay in noticing and then figuring out the reference, but once I did, it really was very, VERY good.

Not sure how to make it more obvious to the reader without ruining the effect, but it might be better to get someone reading through your work for the first time to see if it works better – the (very understandable!) long delay means that I haven’t seen any of Dani’s backstory in a LONG time, so it took a minute.

When I get some time, I might to an archive dive myself. Not sure that would be a good test, since I already saw that panel and figured it out, but hey, your work is good, so it’s not like I wouldn’t enjoy doing an archive dive, anyway…

I just saw a few days ago that this comic has resumed updating. While I’m happy to be able to see the continuation of this story, I’m more relieved that Aneeka is now in a good enough place to be able to do so. I realize that that certainly doesn’t mean that all of the pain and suffering of the tragedies that occurred have vanished; but hopefully, the farther you keep moving forward, the easier things will get.

It occurs to me that since Kat’s implant can forcibly move her limbs, a modification of the technology could allow a fully paralyzed person (like presumably Danni) to walk again.
