I believe where it says โ€˜no one wasโ€™ it should say has.

B-N-O on 05/28/2019 @ 5:34 am

The last bubble: “and no one HAS the resources.”
I wonder what Mary-Jane thinks.

Typo Police on 05/28/2019 @ 5:48 am

In the last text bubble, isn’t it supposed to be “…no one -has- the resources…” rather than “…no one -was- the resources…”?
Also, sad for Jane and those she has lost.

…and it was fixed before I hit the post comment button. Feel free to not approve either post.

You know, it’s kind of funny, but in Kleya’s obsession to be a hero, she’s actually the worst kind of hero ever. This whole recent arc has kind of shown that she hasn’t really stopped being a control freak (with the whole hacking situation with the missiles), ultimately thinks she knows better, then panics and remains a non-factor even though she fully knows her team is screwed without her–or has to take drastic action at best (removing her).

She’s so obsessed with the *idea* of being the hero that she’s going to live to see herself become the villain. What do you think the odds are that this is what happened last time as well, when the world was doomed?

friendlymosquito on 05/28/2019 @ 7:09 am

She’s doing her best ๐Ÿ™ Character growth takes time!
What she really needs are True Friends, to help her out when she’s having trouble! (Preferably people who are better at it than Bandit ๐Ÿ˜› )

Abibliboop on 05/28/2019 @ 2:25 pm

Yeah, I definitely side with she is trying her hardest (doubly so as she doesn’t fully control the “creature” that does the hacking based on her begging it to not help numerous times in the past). Also, Bandit knew it would trigger her by running the sim and as he has proven he isn’t trustworthy it isn’t much surprise she didn’t trust him to not abuse the sim to hurt Dani. He definitely continues to be on my hope he suffers horribly list (he may have some redeeming quality in the future, but not seeing it so far).

She has genuinely done her best to try to redeem herself (both in her own mind and in the minds of everyone hurt by what happened), but when the world is actively trying to kill her in real life and she now knows someone she can’t trust knows who she is what other option is left except to run?

HedronMyr on 05/29/2019 @ 5:42 am

I’m not saying she isn’t trying, or trying hard. If anything I’m leaning more towards the opposite–she’s trying too *hard*. I’m well aware of long character arcs as well: progress is slow, and generally begins with a lot of spinning wheels in the mud with one glimmer of hope you cling onto and build around.

I feel like if there’s going to be a turning point, this’ll have to be it. Kleya’s certainly has some issues, but the vast majority of them have been inconveniences so far. For the first time, we’re seeing something that could genuinely affect long term livelihood. The hero doesn’t need to do much right now, but that little bit is sorely needed, especially by Danni.

We’ll see what happens.

The frustration of life – having and wanting to trust others in a world of untrustworthy people.

Furzey on 05/30/2019 @ 5:21 pm

I believe Bandit to be a good friend – he’s just not perfect. He also has quite a bunch of weight on his shoulders, and isn’t entirely sure what to do. It makes him a quality character trying to do the right thing, but often stumbling along his way.

Abibliboop on 06/03/2019 @ 10:42 am

I wouldn’t say he is a quality character trying to do the right at all.

His character is basically doing what he can to screw those not in Tenka out of being able to make a living in the game (based on his AIs that were intentionally designed to harass and bully people up to the point of killing at least one person), and even then only had an oops my bad moment as opposed to showing any true contrition. He is only trying to help Dani train in order to manipulate her into luring Kat into his training session so he can get her to out herself. He intentionally is going out of his way to ensure Kat can’t be considered one of the good people by forcing the villain route, based on his thoughts and actions in the game. You can try to argue that he wants to re-establish his friendship with her, but he is not a good person and his actions don’t reflect him trying to have a healthy relationship with her (its all about manipulation and toxic behavior so far).

He may change this, but so far he is definitely the least decent or likable person in the comic in my opinion.

Abibliboop on 06/03/2019 @ 11:11 am

And to clarify, I think he is a good character. I think he is extremely well written, I just strongly view him as more of a villain that may be redeemed than someone genuinely trying to be a good person and do the right thing.

Archangel on 05/28/2019 @ 9:45 am

Superlative observation. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’d say that she’s not so much focused on being a hero for its own sake, she’s focused on not being a villain. When you focus on what you don’t want to be, it’s hard to become anything in particular.

Stacts on 05/29/2019 @ 3:55 pm

“When you focus on what you donโ€™t want to be, itโ€™s hard to become anything in particular.” There is a lot of truth in that.

pidgey on 05/30/2019 @ 2:35 pm

Title drop!

UMSLdragon on 05/28/2019 @ 10:42 pm

She’s trying to be a different person from whom she has been. That’s going to take a lot of time. If it’s even at all possible on her own. She will require friends as examples to draw from. Or a type or role model to draw from. It’s easier to mimic a personality(s) and learn how to be more like that person(s).

I’m quite enjoying the authors character development. Each person is an individual and it’s great to see great writing.

JonesNate on 05/28/2019 @ 6:57 am

No one has the resources to track down each case, huh? So TENKA couldn’t? Woooow; I thought they were the saviors of the world!

What’s up with the close-up of Jane? Does she know something? Does she have resources we’re unaware of? Like, maybe she reprogrammed a giant robot, or something?

JonesNate on 05/28/2019 @ 6:59 am

My previous comment had /sarcasm after the world-saviors comment. Apparently the site hides anything inside carrots.

SiliconWolf on 05/28/2019 @ 1:13 pm

I remember that Jane’s husband vanished when he went out to scavenge. And I think one of her three kids died also. I bet the comic is focused on her because that sentence is especially painful for her.

Alex on 05/28/2019 @ 2:17 pm

It took me a while to figure it out, but do you mean carets instead of carrots?

UMSLdragon on 05/28/2019 @ 10:44 pm

I totally understood carrots when you meant carets haha. I’m thinking the filtering cleared it out cause it’s “HTML” related.

Speedy on 06/04/2019 @ 12:57 am

I dunno, y’all. I just finished bingeing the entire archive, and I didn’t see anything inside of carrots. In fact, the first carrots I’ve seen here were in these last few comments.

Maybe my Erbana percentage isn’t high enough for me to see the Carrots of Camouflage.

WillowD on 05/28/2019 @ 12:45 pm

Wow. The look of pain and despair on Jane’s face as the others talk about outsiders disappearing all the time. That is AWESOME artwork.

Iron Ed on 05/28/2019 @ 11:25 pm

I agree with the “Awesome!” part! ๐Ÿ™‚

On the other hand, I think Jane’s expression is because Jane was counting on Kleya’s helping her with her own problem.

D0E8R on 05/28/2019 @ 12:48 pm

Reminds me of narcissistic personality disorder. Some people get so wrapped up in themselves and their own image/how they want others to perceive them that they can’t see the big picture. They think and honestly believe their intentions are pure, but they can be extremely destructive to those around them, because they can’t consider others’ feelings and/or because they believe the ends justify the means… If someone tries to correct them they can get angry and feel threatened, waffling between overwhelming guilt, and intense self-justification. Describes Kleya to a T… She’s very insecure. She honestly believes she is doing the right thing, but is unable to consider perspectives other than her own.

Abibliboop on 05/28/2019 @ 2:38 pm

Are you really considered paranoid when the whole world is actively hunting you to kill you? She does definitely have some issues (understatement of the year), but she also is in a position where if she screws up she will most likely either die or cause her “protective” AI to destroy what’s left of civilization. That is a very heavy burden to bear for a child (being isolated from people during a traumatic experience at a developmental stage definitely has consequences, so regardless of physical age he emotional age would be hindered).

I agree that she is very insecure, but she has also been considerate of Dani’s feelings and definitely showed empathy when trying to help Mina and her family, so its kind of unfair to say she is unable to consider other people and their points of view. She just has an overwhelming desire to try to prove she can help people so she doesn’t have to be alone anymore.

UMSLdragon on 05/28/2019 @ 10:49 pm

I think it’ to prove it to herself as much as other people. She’s being hunted and is wanting to fix her mistakes. I don’t know, there is so much backstory we haven’t experience yet as well.

ChiSig on 05/28/2019 @ 5:09 pm

This is way off the mark, and you should check the other parts of any definition of NPD.

Exaggerated sense of self importance? Sense of entitlement and need for admiration? Fantasies of great success? Thinks absolutely nothing is wrong with herself?

That’s basically Mina. It could hardly be further from Kleya.

Speedy on 06/04/2019 @ 1:18 am

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good description of Keiko. Kleya, on the other hand, is trying very hard to not be like that.

Novalyyn on 05/28/2019 @ 2:36 pm

Well that’s a system that’ll make people try to dump on Outsiders more.

“We can’t have Outsiders in our group! If they suddenly disappear, we’ll be screwed and losing popularity until we can convince the higher ups to let us replace them!”

Iron Ed on 05/28/2019 @ 11:28 pm

Per your “alt.txt” comment, Aneeka: Yes! That first panel is terrific! Also; I am very fond of the backgrounds all through this strip, but it shows up best in the first panel.

PaintedLoyalty on 06/01/2019 @ 3:44 pm
