Why would Jake keep D around in his own server? Now THAT is a good and productive question. Que: interruption!

Kin on 09/25/2018 @ 7:43 am

I don’t think ANYONE can “scrub” D out of any server at all. Not even Jake. Why do he is looking for Kat so hard?

Krimsonnekros on 09/25/2018 @ 11:28 am

Except it’s been heavily implied that Jake could at least keep up with her. So if he wanted D gone, he probably could have scrubbed him, or at least heavily restricted his access on his private server.

David on 09/25/2018 @ 12:58 pm

I’m betting Kleya doesn’t know just how ingrained he is in the systems, if he is indeed connected to “the virus” that no one can touch.

Chiu ChunLing on 09/25/2018 @ 1:52 pm

Jake can keep up with her in a game.

She probably has never realized that doesn’t really imply much about his coding ability. We’ve seen this before, she assumes that Jake’s coding is just lazy and sloppy, but that’s contrary to everything we know about him, his coding is more likely at the limit of his conscientiously applied abilities.

Tim C on 09/26/2018 @ 12:56 am

Tenka also treats Jake like a prodigy, though, so if that’s the case, it’s not just Keiko who has the wrong impression.

aanon on 09/26/2018 @ 8:45 am

Maybe not. He might be a prodigy to them because of how limited the pool of people who can/are willing to program is these days. I mean Dr. Grace mentions Hacker Hunts on page 154 which suggests to me that all programmers, not just hackers, were uh not treated so ‘nicely’.

Steve on 09/26/2018 @ 3:28 pm

He probably doesn’t see D as a threat (D did help him in the past) and from other pages D never marked him a threat either. I wouldn’t doubt if D was somehow beneficial to his server too, for at least security if not the best software on earth to manage the server.

Liliet on 09/25/2018 @ 4:14 am

this feels like a good time to mention that ‘kley’ means ‘glue’ in russian and adding ‘a’ to the end just makes it female like ‘kleya’ sounding like ‘female glue’ to my ear and thats why im not a fan of this particular name
Keiko it is now and forever as far as im concerned 0.0

Sempiternity on 09/25/2018 @ 10:40 am

But maybe apropos?

Alexander The 1st on 09/25/2018 @ 12:19 pm

I dunno – Kleya kind of works in that context.

She’s the glue holding the party together. What’s that? She’s already hardened and liable to snap under pressure?

Clearly Dani’s trying to soften the glue so that the party will actually stick together.

awhorl on 09/25/2018 @ 2:22 pm

Think “clef”–it also means “key.”

Kale on 09/25/2018 @ 6:34 am

Clearly because he is a man of culture who loves dragons.

friendlymosquito on 09/25/2018 @ 7:39 am

He loves dragons AND he loves Keiko 😛

Alexander The 1st on 09/25/2018 @ 12:36 pm

Doesn’t hurt that he can plot helping Keiko by putting a sign on his server saying “Warning: here be dragons.”

Stacts on 09/25/2018 @ 7:08 am

In answer to Danni’s question. It’s gray to match the color of Klea’s soul…

Alex on 09/27/2018 @ 2:17 pm

Well, there are quite a few dozen shades in there, if you get my drift. 🙂

adsfasdf on 09/25/2018 @ 7:32 am

maybe she likes gray, you ever think of that? why are you such a b*** danni ugg fine i’ll make everything pink and yellow and garish happy now

zophah on 09/25/2018 @ 10:29 am

Her room is set to standard because she’s so paranoid that buying things for her room leaves a digital trail.

O8h7w on 09/25/2018 @ 11:08 am

Completely new theory (I think?): Jake keeps D around because D is really a multi-user system and much like Keiko, he has good use of D. Helps get him that upper hand over anyone but Keiko when it comes to dealing with code and playing the game. Maybe also to keep the Virus under control, quite likely especially since it seems the Virus is closely related to D or pretty much the same thing.

Steve on 09/26/2018 @ 3:43 pm

Didn’t we figure out that D was the virus? Jake interacts with him on a display at one point and I think it was revealed that D caused it all trying to protect Keiko. Then again I like to make up stories about stories in my head… I need to reread it all. lol

Chiu ChunLing on 09/25/2018 @ 1:56 pm

We’ve seen Jake’s level of expertise/knowledge/available options when it comes to dealing with D. K-girl just doesn’t get how limited other people’s abilities are compared to her own, she things that because Jake is good at games, he’s near her level as a programmer/hacker, and just doesn’t bother to apply himself.

In other words, her understanding of his character is about what one would expect from a girl who just doesn’t get people.

Mike on 09/26/2018 @ 1:31 am

Here’s a nasty thought: “D” is actually the computer itself. Possibly named “D” because that is the DRIVE she used so often, the “D” drive. It can’t be deleted because they would have to destroy the entire remaining supercomputer net to get it. And the bad guys have no idea that the computer mainframe that they stole/co-opted/took over by other means, is a full-fledged AI.

I mean, seriously, her parents and her were all prodigies of one form or another. They may not have meant for the computer to gain sentience, but the systems they were inventing hooked it up directly to her brain. That’s a “boot-strap” sentience booster right there. “D” trusts her because she is the template for its own mind.

Chiu ChunLing on 09/26/2018 @ 1:56 pm

More likely the physical hardware is too complex to use without interfacing through an advanced AI, and D is hooked into all the AIs that can be used to set up and maintain servers.

paciii on 09/26/2018 @ 12:01 pm

When setting up a server, if you are advanced enough, you get to select what is and is not installed on that server. The operating system you want, the tools you need, the problems which you are researching. And you get to pick what VERSION of those things you install. His server may have an older, tamer version of D that he has interacted with and can whisper to as well as K can to “her” D. I’m sure we will find out.

Chiu ChunLing on 09/26/2018 @ 1:53 pm

No evidence that Jake or anyone, even K-ko, is capable of setting up servers from scratch and having them do anything useful like host a virtual reality session running a version of the Game.

Probably nearly everything was being handled by AI even before the crash. Consider for a moment that the system they use to create avatars is an image recognition tool that converts a hand-drawn image into a 5D model with full animation rigging and complex physics, there isn’t even an option for creating an avatar without going through that automated process. After the crash, it would take someone near K-ko’s level of expertise to allow a D-infected AI to set up a server and then go back and eliminate D’s hooks into it. Or to even detect if someone allowed D to piggyback onto their character upload and reinfect the server.

K just assumes that other people can do most of what she can and she’s only qualitatively better at it than everyone else. But we’ve repeatedly seen that she’s completely wrong, the things that she’s always worrying about them doing to find her are things they don’t even know how to try to do. Instead she’s at risk of giving herself away in completely silly ways (like always using names that start with K, so obvious that it wasn’t even mentioned in the discussion of “Why we think she might be K or someone trying to impersonate her”).

DragonMaster on 09/28/2018 @ 5:39 am

Ummm I think you might be off in your dimensions there. “converts a hand-drawing into a 5D model.” I have to ask, what’s the 5th dimension your using?

Chiu ChunLing on 09/28/2018 @ 6:25 pm

Animation and rigging plus dynamic physics and damage modeling. I mentioned those.

Cynic on 09/28/2018 @ 8:11 am

She’s also completely unaware of the Virus and how entrenched it is in Tenka’s architecture. Perhaps it might not have been all that hard for Jake to remove D from his server in normal environment, but it becomes a bit more difficult if any attempt at removal might be met with resistance not only in-server, but also in the actual world.

Daisy on 09/27/2018 @ 10:25 am

Just because we’re living in a post apocalyptic world doesn’t mean you can’t utilize a splash of color in your training rooms.

Archangel on 09/28/2018 @ 7:44 am

Why am I thinking “Jack Raiden”?
