sorry Kat, but, i don’t see the problem? i mean, you’ve sworn off hacking, so, isn’t this perfect training?

SiliconWolf on 09/21/2018 @ 9:19 am

Um. Let’s put it this way. What if she was a recovering kleptomaniac and was invited to the Super Bling Palace of Silly Knick-Knacks (Now with telepathic security guards armed with deadly weapons)? But wait, it’s WORSE than that. The security at Super Bling Palace of Silly Knick-Knacks will shoot you dead if you accidentally bump anything.

Remember, most people can’t bump the code by accident. She (and probably Jake) can.

Min on 09/21/2018 @ 10:02 am

SW,
Maybe her rogue AI can bump the code without her telling it to.
Bumping the code is a deliberate decision… granted, one she may take stupidly.

It’s implied that her cyborg suit is a prototype kido, and we’ve just had it established that the intent of the kido’s was to work off reading the user’s mind.
So what I think has happened is that her one is too sensitive and she is too much a natural at working with computer code; so she merely has to have a thought about *maybe* doing something and her cyborg suit automatically does it. Which would explain how she manages to hack without thinking about it (thus her need for her special that stops her doing so) and it might even explain how, as a child, she “accidentally” caused an apocalypse.

I think this is the right explanation. Note how it is with things you have muscle memory for: they can be done without thinking about it, and in some cases you have to try really hard to stop your body from doing what it usually does. If you spend enough time with your hands on your keyboard you will find that for some commands in some situations, your fingers may execute them without you actively deciding to do so. For example: when I debug a piece of code I automatically run it after each edit. The Kidos (to varying degrees) are indeed mind-computer interfaces and will make this much more powerful, have a thought and the next thing you know the computer is running the code you thought into existence.

Of course, it can easily be worked around by temporarily setting your usual edit command to open files read-only. I guess Keiko hasn’t thought of that yet.

or the ability to “key remap” might not of been implemented. if this is a prototype this could of been a feature they where going to work on latter. or perhaps it’s something the people who made it never thought about. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been annoyed when using various programs because it’s thinks it’s making it easier on me by automatically doing certain things, when that is not what I’m trying to do. it can make it very difficult to do what I want because it’s trying to do what it thinks I want and I’m trying to tell it to something else, but there’s no way to turn off those (in)convenience functions.

O8h7w on 09/23/2018 @ 7:31 am

I know exactly what you mean. However, I have found that this is much less of a problem when it comes to programming tools. Go figure!

meerling on 09/23/2018 @ 11:58 am

Coding is second nature to her, and she has a cybernetic link to the system. She actually has to be careful and vigilant to avoid tweak anything.

On something as big as the game, there are trillions of variables being altered by at least millions of sources, so a certain level of changes will never be noticed.

But on a private server, those are small and limited, as well as the owners tending to be rather particular about their settings. If anything at all changes, they are likely to notice, especially if they are watching for changes. Remember, she suspects Bandit, so of course she thinks he would be looking for any hacking.

Then there’s D, who can do things on his own initiative and is always eager to help her.

Overall, she has significant reasons to be nervous about this.

O8h7w on 09/21/2018 @ 7:52 am

Has there ever been two people that so badly need to fail in order to succeed?

I don’t see it happening that either Keiko or Jake will pull through and achieve their goals without the two of them cooperating. On the other hand, if they do, they are probably the mightiest people on the planet… and still likely too dysfunctional for that to end well…

Danni will be important.

friendlymosquito on 09/21/2018 @ 5:53 pm

Danni is the only one not wrapped up in angst and tunnel vision and bad history. Makes her uniquely suited to focusing on what’s important 😀

kit ramos on 09/22/2018 @ 4:00 pm

well it’s true she has less angst and less tunnel vision now. but it’s hard to say how she’d react if she found out that Kat isn’t just some really skilled and somewhat eccentric hacker that helped her out of a bind. but that person everyone things caused the clamity that got her stuck.

friendlymosquito on 09/23/2018 @ 8:18 pm

I like to think Danni has had enough interaction with Kleya to at least reserve judgement and ask for an explanation if she ever finds out the truth. She seems sensible that way.

Alex on 09/21/2018 @ 9:46 am

This is gonna be so much fun! ^^

Jdorr on 09/21/2018 @ 10:15 am

“Careful or they will realize who I am” both of them about the other who already knows who the other is

What she doesn’t know is that he knows.
What he doesn’t know is that she knows.

Will their codes finally meet?

Find out now on this episode of the ‘Server Times Out’.

dr pepper on 09/21/2018 @ 9:22 pm

This is like getting ready for a first date at 15.

Just_IDD on 09/21/2018 @ 11:47 pm

Wait… Dani’s plan? What was Dani’s plan? I mean why would Jake phrase it that way? I thought this was his plan.

It’s almost like Dani doesn’t know what uranium is and these two are not quite volitile uranium lumps.

Let’s watch as Dani is encouraging them to get together…

DragonMaster on 09/22/2018 @ 8:10 am

LOL the two adorkable fools are about to have a nervous breakdown and they haven’t even done anything yet.

Gilly on 09/25/2018 @ 8:40 pm

So am I [excited] but I kept refreshing all day (okay, twice each break I had) and no meeeeeeting. I am not even disappointed – too much anticipation for that.
