I have a feeling this, getting paid for doing something she was asked to do because she’s good at it, will be a major step forward for Kleya. It can really make you feel like finally, you did something right.

I feel like Kleya will turn right around and give the money to Jane or something

asdsad on 05/18/2018 @ 8:40 am

how does money not buy her time? she gets time because she brings in money from the game right? and didn’t she say her parents were in debt to get her time?

Rakaydos on 05/18/2018 @ 9:58 am

Give a girl a hundred dollars, she lives for a day. (or week, or month, whatever). Let her MAKE a hundred dollars, she’ll live for the rest of her… ok, I didnt think this analogy through.

BloodPlum on 05/18/2018 @ 10:37 am

It’s stated straight out that the people in charge of her life changed the rules to prevent her or her parents from just paying for it. She probably uses a lot of resources to stay alive, so for her being famous is the only way they can coldly justify doing so. It’s a sh***y situation all around.

Alexander The 1st on 05/18/2018 @ 1:04 pm

Yeah – they were good to loan the registration funds to her, but the money isn’t what keeps her in.

They need people to work the farms, and Danni’s not I’m a situation to do that herself. So her parents needed to pull extra shifts.

Atros on 05/18/2018 @ 1:11 pm

I’m sure if she had like, Scrooge McDuck levels of money it would, but she’s a resource-eating vegetable in a society that struggles to feed its people. The amount of money she has is trivial compared to the expense of her ongoing existence. Only city-morale-boosting levels of fame (local, legendary dancer kicks Bandit’s smug face through a tree!) are “enough” for the city officials to decide she’s worth the cost.

AeonStar on 05/19/2018 @ 12:36 am

It was mentioned that Citizens can’t get jobs in LiFe except for the Game, so I think that money, period, isn’t the issue. Food isn’t for sale at any price.

Solitus on 05/21/2018 @ 2:25 pm

This isnt our world where you can just buy food. Outsiders have to farm it all by hand, and thanks to DeconstructMe, there isn’t automated labor anymore. In that situation, living hand to mouth, money is quite worthless.

GLJorodan on 05/21/2018 @ 10:24 pm

keep in mind we know very little about DeconstructMe. Including how real it is and how fictional Scapegoat it is

Ladyofthemasque on 05/22/2018 @ 10:19 am

Uh…I think it’s City folk who do most of the food farming? That’s literally why Danni’s parents are pulling extra shifts. It’s been implied that Outsiders often end up either scavenging (and as it’s been a while, supplies are running low) or relying upon shipments of ration bar stuff for food, shipped to them by the cities.

EV on 05/18/2018 @ 10:30 am

Geez, Bandit really made her feel guilty about the whole thing. Not that it’s bad she try to find a way to help people, but I think it’s clear she’d trying very hard to prove it somehow lol Danni’s a good person

friendlymosquito on 05/18/2018 @ 5:30 pm

Ah, I see Kleya is going for the “complete self-sacrifice” model of goodness. Let’s hope the naivete of that approach does not completely backfire on her. Luckily I think Danni is coming to the rescue with pragmatism!

Jindra34 on 05/18/2018 @ 5:44 pm

I don’t think its pragmatism. I think its already having seen what that attitude did (or almost) did to her parents and being determined not to let anyone else goes through that.

Robert Rosenthal on 05/18/2018 @ 8:45 pm

I can’t wait to see what she eventually comes up with.
I also wonder how much input Danni will have on it.
After all, Kleya could just make something she thinks works.
Or she could get a basic description first.
Best result for the customer is to consult them on it frequently, but don’t let them have any full design control. In software any time the customer has a complete design say in what’s happening, the final product is only a fifth as good, takes ten times longer, and costs a hundred times as much. Feature creep and changing minds are a freaking nightmare! (Yes, I have worked in the software side of things.)

Obviously you do want to consult them for a quality product they’ll appreciate and can use effectively, but don’t overdo it, and never let them take control. Set clear boundaries and don’t let them cross over.

Crud, Kleya is likely to be screwed by this if Danni isn’t understanding and willing to let the expert (Kleya) be allowed to do it right. Well, Danni seems like the person that will mostly keep from sticking her nose in it, even if she will give opinions willingly. Maybe it will work out ok. I’m just worried about Kleya in this. She really doesn’t have any experience with working WITH others.

I’m babbling. I’ll stop now. 🙂

Jindra34 on 05/19/2018 @ 5:31 pm

Your babbling yes. But the basic truth there isn’t just for software design. It applies to everything. Doubly so for things that might get expensive prototyping phases.

dormagio on 05/21/2018 @ 8:09 pm

I love this comic

Ladyofthemasque on 05/22/2018 @ 10:32 am

Kleya is learning one of the best possible lessons right on this page, and I’m not sure if anyone caught its true significance, yet. It’s not about the money (D can reroute any sort of supply shipment to her whenever he’s asked, food, clothing, etc). It’s about Danni ordering Kleya to be *kind* to *herself*, and graciously accepting it.

When you feel a LOT of guilt and have an intense pressure to make amends (as we know Kleya does, duh), then it’s very hard to forgive yourself. That part is somewhat obvious. What isn’t so obvious is the corollary to this: Those who feel intense guilt or shame often fail to be kind to themselves in an effort to punish themselves.

When you want to give and give and give, particularly out of guilt, it becomes very hard to simply accept kind things being done to you in return. It becomes difficult to graciously receive…and sometimes the person had to relearn how to accept being given things (money, gifts, opportunities, etc) because of the subconscious belief they need to be deprived and punished.

It’s obvious Kleya doesn’t *need* money now that she’s in the Game, but it’s also obvious she doesn’t feel like being kind to herself, doesn’t feel yet like she deserves kindnesses, doesn’t feel like she’s earned kindnesses. Her agreeing to design Danni a special AND accept payment for it means that Kleya is accepting she *is* doing good enough deeds that she deserves–at least on a subconscious level–being rewarded with payment for them.

Plus, Danni’s pretty scary-stern/determined in that last panel, *and* she used the word “*please*” (emphasized in bold font, no less). I have not gotten the impression that a lot of people have said that to Kleya. She’s giving in because it’s important to Danni…but it’s a positive reward and a reinforcement into her subconscious that Danni, at least, thinks that Kat/Kleya is doing good.

Chiu ChunLing on 05/27/2018 @ 11:08 pm

A bit long, but true.

Kat needs to learn that being good to people involves checking to make sure it allows them to be good as a result.
