And of course she will find that it’s not true and this will lead to nothing, right??

Just kidding. This suggests we are approaching some eye opening revelations that will be game changing (perhaps literally).

Zigraphix on 01/02/2018 @ 2:23 pm

Oh Kat, you know it must be true. Jane must have known you’d be able to check up on her. What are you going to do now?

(And if she does decide to help Jane because of her kids… does this count as helping Jane for Jane’s reasons, or for Kat’s?)

Rowen Morland on 01/02/2018 @ 5:08 pm

I don’t think any ordinary survivor would be able to check up on Jane, or that Jane would know that Kat could. It seems like prior to and after the ending privacy settings were superior to basic checking by people who weren’t/aren’t master hackers.

Zigraphix on 01/02/2018 @ 2:25 pm

BTW, what’s the difference between “where she is” and “where she’s at”? As these two phrases are in a list with “where she has been,” separated by semicolons, I interpret that they are each meant to be a separate data request….

dralou on 01/02/2018 @ 3:05 pm

I read this as: where she is = where she’s located. Where she’s at = what’s her current living situation.

Chiu ChunLing on 01/02/2018 @ 4:14 pm

Normally “where she’s at” would be distinct by being her psychological state, but I’d guess that D wouldn’t know that. It seems like it could also mean “what access point/signal path is she using” as compared to general physical location.

Kaian on 01/02/2018 @ 6:00 pm

I think this is Kat thinking fast and rephrasing as she tries to narrow her scope to something usable.

Dragon Master on 01/02/2018 @ 3:07 pm

I’m assuming one is for her IRL location and where she is in L.i.f.e. Jane is the only one who we don’t know what she looks like outside of The Game.

Treesie on 01/02/2018 @ 3:59 pm

I’d think the “where she is” would have coordinates and the “where she’s at” would have data of surrounding landscape/landmarks.

Stacts on 01/02/2018 @ 4:27 pm

“Where she is” is grammatically correct while “Where she’s at” is grammatically incorrect.

Cat on 01/02/2018 @ 11:26 pm

“Where she is” is probably her geographical location, and “Where she’s at” is the name of whatever place she is, like an address or town. Side note; “Where she’s at is a contraction of “Where she is at”.

ktrimbach on 01/03/2018 @ 8:56 am

I read it as kind of a intro/overview:
Where she is;
where she’s at;
where she has been.
Is she in the known areas?
Or somewhere else?
Find everything you can on her.

Nathaniel - Xenithos on 01/02/2018 @ 3:37 pm

Are we gonna have a vote incentive soon? 🙂 I know you’re busy but….

David Creighton Samuels on 01/02/2018 @ 4:21 pm

I think someone has taken your idea, and made it into a movie called Ready Player One.

Jiyuueno on 01/03/2018 @ 5:06 pm

Well this comic is about a year older than the book, you may be on to something.

Chiu ChunLing on 01/02/2018 @ 4:25 pm

The map of “known areas” seems pretty interesting. Except I’m not sure which areas are “known” as opposed to “not”. The immediate assumption would be that “known” areas would be those with high levels of surviving information infrastructure, allowing for people in those areas to have better access to TENka shipments and L.i.F.e., but it could be that hackers would thrive in those areas and actually make things difficult for anyone to find.

Or it could be both, a “known area” is one with surviving information infrastructure that hasn’t been significantly compromised by hacking.

There is also the question of whether “known area” means known to TENka or known to D and Kleya. Certainly there should be some overlap, D seems to basically own TENka’s infosphere, but probably Kleya has a lot more mapped out than TENka does.

Pebkio on 01/02/2018 @ 5:11 pm

Even if you swept in and carried the Jane’s away to a safe place, and then the Lilly’s… and then the next group… you *can’t* personally save everyone. What’s your plan, anyway? Please tell me you have something *more* than just wanting to be viewed as a hero instead of a villain because you’d feel better about yourself.

Cat on 01/02/2018 @ 11:28 pm

I think that, for her, it’s more that she’s realized how much suffering she has caused by ending the world, and genuinely wants to make amends to (at least) the people she knows.

Pebkio on 01/04/2018 @ 10:29 am

Okay, sure, but I hope she has a plan for that beyond just being viewed as a hero. It’s not going to work if she becomes a hero in a game and then comes out with “surprise, I’m really the cyborg”.

Tenka has a plan… either for if she is or if she isn’t the cyborg.
Jane has a plan.
But does Kleya have a plan? An actual plan? Beyond “be a hero so people like me”?

Astral on 01/08/2018 @ 6:00 am

She may be a genius, but at the same time she’s what, 15 years old? Of course she doesn’t have a plan. At this moment she’s just a kid that wants to start interacting with people again, wants to be praised by people again, but at the same time is extremely afraid of trusting anyone (for a good reason).

Beyond that, she’s just reacting to events. It’s only due to interacting with new people and situations that she’s (just now) starting to care about anything more than her basic, initial goal.

Besides, seriously, with her naivety, simplistic thinking and lack of an experience, it’s actually better that she isn’t planning on fixing the world right now.

lilyvonpseudonym on 01/02/2018 @ 10:57 pm

… I just reread the archive and ran out of comic again.

it is really upsetting because i want more nooooow.

I really love your work, Aneeka, and it’s getting better with every page. Thank you so much for producing this comic.

meerling on 01/03/2018 @ 4:11 am

I wonder if she’s just trying to check veracity, or is instead info scouting for future action to aid them.

ktrimbach on 01/03/2018 @ 9:00 am

That first panel is a real tease. Coming back to the comic after the hoidays and seeing that I’m thinking “Uh oh. They figured out she’s alive and are now they’re searching for her! What did I miss?!? Then I click back and – Oh, it’s just the follow-on. Nothng crazy.
You sly devil.

ktrimbach on 01/03/2018 @ 9:08 am

I think that Kleya’s going to find out a whole lot about the world that she might not want to know. We’ve had hnts of this with the whole Outsider/Citizen discussions. And also with the Minas’ situation – especially about that medbot (or whatever it was). She may also find out about Jane and Sandra’s plans. She could probably even find out all the different factions that Brandon is working for.
Oh, wait. D is starting with Tenka, so she’ll find out plenty just from that.

kyriss12 on 01/03/2018 @ 11:05 am

I’m thinking she really should have told D. to be subtle. With as literal and amoral as that A.I. is I could easily see it tearing through Tenka’s system with all the subtlety of a pissed off rhino in a china shop, crashing various important systems, and exposing Kats identity.

GLJordan on 01/03/2018 @ 9:29 pm

I suspect depending on what Kat finds out, The Kat will be coming out of the bag with a “big boom” anyway.

Sev on 01/04/2018 @ 4:30 am

Upvote for Kat out of the bag.

Matt on 01/04/2018 @ 12:45 pm

Why point out that the map is familiar? Was it in question that this was a future Earth?

Just_IDD on 01/04/2018 @ 10:53 pm

An interesting comment on the coloring of the map. If we assume that the lighter colored/orange areas are population dense then Australia is colored wrong. Most of the Australian population lives within 100 miles/ 160 kilometers of the ocean. Much of the Interior is a vast empty High Desert filled with animals bad for humans.

Chiu ChunLing on 01/05/2018 @ 8:15 am

Yes, but “known” does not imply “populated”. Population would tend to correlate to the raw amount of information infrastructure prior to the Ending, but the behavior of certain populations during the Ending (as well as the environment since) could shift the relevant balances. I have a sort of image in my mind of Australia being the sort of place where supervolcanoes don’t occur. As well as the population mostly having a healthy bit of eccentricity rather than succumbing to fits of total mass insanity.

Chiu ChunLing on 01/05/2018 @ 8:17 am

There has been a certain amount of speculation in the past about what exactly that map showed. Now it has been associated with “known areas”, whatever that means.

Steven on 01/05/2018 @ 3:35 pm

Seems simple enough:
Where she is = Find her coordinates
Where she is at = Find the name of where she lives, if it has one
Where she has been = Self explanatory
Known areas = colored in areas on map
Unknown = White areas, probably areas outside of Tenka’s reach

Nine on 01/09/2018 @ 6:45 pm

Okay I just can’t handle it… I know some of you think D is just a weak AI but I think ‘it’(he) is a strong AI, I this page D is shown happy but when kat reminds him to be careful ‘it’(he) frowns and I don’t think any animal(system) other than humans(true AI’s) that will dislike making the extra effort to be careful

Nine on 01/10/2018 @ 9:46 pm

And I don’t think that just a weak AI would help the plot.

antrik on 01/14/2018 @ 2:34 am

“Some of you”? It was just me — and I only posited it as a possibility…
