‘Not A Villain’ Webcomic – Page 579

Kim is aware of her anger issues. Doesn't mean she'll do much about it.

Edit: Fixed a typo. Thanks to all who pointed it out!

Um, shouldn’t it be “forbid” in panel 4?

So Kim is all about control instead of trust and loyalty instead of friendship. Sad, but could be worse. But hey, at least she’s intelligent enough to realize why Bandit came to her first. Though if she followed their Game she should have realized that there was no time frame for Bandit to see Dr. Grace yet, so I guess she… switched the stream off after the first time Dude found the Portal and went after the hacker instead? I guess she really did lose interest in Kat then. Or plans on watching it later.

I didn’t know that Dr. Grace can forbid Kim of all people from doing something. Makes me wonder if he thinks that the hacker is the Deconstruct Me leader instead of Kat, buuuut he probably finds it unlikely what with them being able to track the hacker easily.

Apropos: Do you have a real name for Kleya yet? I know you admitted to having a tendency to not name characters and places, but your main character should have one by now, right? Right?

I think the edit button should be available for a bit longer than a few minutes, because posting a comment has been really slow for me ever since the new system got setup (i.e. about 3 minutes), so the time frame is really tiny.

edit: Though sometimes it takes only 20 seconds.

“Forbid” is present tense, “forbade” is past tense. “Forbade” is correct in this sentence. But it’s a word you don’t see often, so it’s pretty normal to be confused.

AustereDreamer on 06/09/2017 @ 7:56 am

Actually, in this case Alex is correct. It is in the infinitive form here, due to the “to”. Though since “had” is also there, if you removed “the gall to” from the phrase, it would change to forbidden.

English is weird.

DanaA on 06/09/2017 @ 8:00 am

Not really. The sentence uses the infinitive form not the past tense, which is “to forbid” so it’s still wrong. “He even gave me his phone number” or “He even had the gall to give me his phone number” to use a more familiar irregular verb example with the same pattern (forgive/forgave is analogous to give/gave).

Lord Torath on 06/09/2017 @ 8:29 am

“He forbade me” is correct.

“He wanted to forbade me” is incorrect. Alex is right; this should be “He even had the gall to forbid me…”

friendlymosquito on 06/09/2017 @ 8:29 am

But the past tense is taken care of by the “had” previously in the sentence. The verb in question is in the infinitive form, “to forbid”.

Kevin Starwaster on 06/09/2017 @ 8:08 pm

I concur with the others. Forbid is the correct usage here, not forbade.

AustereDreamer on 06/09/2017 @ 7:49 am

Dr. Grace has power due to having owned the city Tenka currently lives in, prior to the ending. It seems he has enough power to do what he wants, as long as it isn’t directly against the president or anything like that, especially since city leader ship controls who leaves and who stays. “Maybe Kim would be better replaced with useful outsiders”, and all that.

Alex on 06/09/2017 @ 8:39 am

Well, I know about the tenses, but “to [past tense]” is something I’ve never heard of before, especially when there is already another verb that indicates the tense.

To me it sounds like any of the following examples:
“He had the courage to went into the cave.”
“She received the ability to flew.”
“The dog learnt to begged for food.”
Does that sound right? And if not, then why is panel 4 an exception?

Skyler on 06/09/2017 @ 1:21 pm

Normally I would roll my eyes and go “human beings don’t speak with grammatical perfection as long as it sounds good” but in this case it doesn’t even sound good. I am inclined to agree; “forbid” is better.

Alex on 06/09/2017 @ 11:38 pm

Hahaha, wow, those are many responses to the grammar thing. 😀

Snoots Dwagon on 06/09/2017 @ 7:30 am

I am somewhat lost again. What is going on at this time? Could someone kindly give little dwagon a synopsis. I don’t understand what’s the big deal about a portal being in the game, or who the spy is, or why they think there’s a spy, and what would the spy be trying to accomplish…

Yeah, lost. Definitely. In need of help. : )

Keybounce on 06/09/2017 @ 11:44 am

The portal was unauthorized.

Basically, someone hacked the game to insert a new portal to a new location. Unapproved alteration of the system’s official database of what places in-game go to what other places in-game.

The spy? The people running the show have their own spy in the group to keep tabs on the players. The spy is most likely Bloody Mary Jane (watson). What is she trying to accomplish?

Unknown. We know that Tenka is pulling her strings by threatening her real-life children.

Steve on 06/09/2017 @ 12:39 pm

The spy could be Danni as she could be pressured into with promised time in life. I think she would rebel against that idea, but it is possible.

kin on 06/09/2017 @ 6:12 pm

Or… her children are threatened by the location they are in. And its just stable ENOUGH that they are too low on immigration priority. Even with Jane’s programming skills, there may be too many dependents to take in any city.

If Jane is even willing to join a city at all that is. Kleya might not be the only paranoid hacker around.

Keybounce on 06/09/2017 @ 11:46 am

Oh yea — Welcome dwagon. I take it you are here from Erfworld for a vacation?

Snoots Dwagon on 06/09/2017 @ 7:31 am

BTW, is anyone else having problems with the Captcha thing regularly rejecting a valid code entry (proper lc/uc and all)? I regularly have it reject the first code entry, regardless of accuracy. (It did on this one too.)

Kytheros on 06/11/2017 @ 10:34 pm

Could be a Captcha time-out issue. That’s happened elsewhere for me.

Alex on 06/12/2017 @ 1:58 am

This always happens if you take more than a certain amount of time to write your post, because then apparently the captcha changes in the background without telling the user about it.

Mal on 06/09/2017 @ 7:57 am

“To Forbade”… Not so much…

AustereDreamer on 06/10/2017 @ 10:09 pm

Hmm… The more I look at Jake’s character, the more it seems he has a weakness for… well, weakness, rather than a weakness for Kat in specific…
