I like the new design of the comment section and especially the new feature, i.e. notification of replies to comments! I think the comment text field needs to auto-resize when someone pastes a big chunk of text or it needs scroll bars.

Aaaaand I’m already at the midway point of The Wanted Child. So much for trying to read it slowly. My favorite typo was when De was written as Du once, because this implies DuDe the Great. 😀 If you need proof-reading for volume 3, just send me an E-Mail, I’ll pay for it as normal and my reward for proof-reading will be being able to read it earlier.

I concur with your opinion of the new comment system.

Not sure what the little rectangles in the top right of each comment do yet. One is a share function, which is interesting in and of itself, not sure about the other though.

Kevin on 02/14/2017 @ 9:23 am

The one on the right opens a box with a permalink to the comment. Your comment is http://navcomic.com/not-a-villain/page-548/#comment-25033

woah there Alex, nice attempt, but you’ve had the books what, a week or so now.. and you’re.. volunteering… to help out for advanced copies?

nice try, but the queues about a mile behind me and I’m not even near the front.

😛

Alex on 02/14/2017 @ 12:02 pm

I don’t mean to cut in line. 🙂
I don’t see the problem if I’m willing to pay the full price for it (just so long as I don’t have to pay again for the final release), because why not just allow for everyone in the queue to do that? Would there be any harm in doing that? I think that having 1000 proof-readers is a nice thing, even if only 20 turn out to be reliable.
This might even make for a nice kickstarter reward.

Btw: I just realized that the reply notification didn’t work.

Aneeka on 02/14/2017 @ 5:10 pm

Regarding proofreading copies, I’m currently toying with this idea: Putting the ebook on pre-order a month or so in advance. Those that pre-order it can then send me an email of their receipt. Then I’ll send them my current edraft and they’ll get to read it early and hopefully proofread it. With their help, I’ll get the typos all sorted out and upload a fresh, error-free ecopy which will then be distributed to everyone the day the book officially goes live (including those who already proofread it, but now they get the error-free copy, too). Printed copies will follow shortly after.

Of course, the above is all moot until I have a working draft of book 3. The current rewrite (I’ve lost count on how many, but it’s somewhere in the teens by now) is looking good, but I can’t be confident until I finish it (which will be in April).

Also, thanks for alerting me about the “Du” typo.

Did you get a reply notification for this comment, btw?

Alex on 02/15/2017 @ 2:18 am

I didn’t receive a notification E-Mail. Did you receive one after unlocking this comment?

It’s great to hear that you’re targeting April! In that case I shall be done reading both volumes by then. 🙂

If you do a pre-order phase, will there be an option without american Amazon? They don’t like non-native bank accounts and I don’t have a CC.

As for the DuDe, I found a couple of other typos, too, but I thought that it was way too late to mention them now, what with the book having been out for about five years.
E.g. if you do a search for “ponytail”, you will find one instance where it probably should have been pigtail instead. Other than that it’s mostly about missing prepositions here and I think once instance of There/They’re happened as well. I could write down the ones I find in the future if it still helps.

Aneeka on 02/15/2017 @ 10:03 am

I should clarify that having a working draft completed by April does not mean the book will be published then. Once I have a working draft, it can take 3-9 months before it’s ready for publication.

I’m always happy to fix typos. The print editions are doomed, but I can at least fix the ebook versions (and if I do another print run, can set up a more error-free version).

I am not sure about pre-orders on non-american Amazons. I would assume yes, but won’t know for sure until I start researching the matter (which I won’t bother until I actually have a book that is ready to be put on pre-order).

I didn’t receive a notification either which means that feature is not working right. Sigh. I’ll turn it off; I don’t have the time to figure out the problem right now.

Alex on 02/15/2017 @ 11:16 am

Alright, then I shall write down what I can find and E-Mail you once I’m done.

Thanks for taking the time to reply again and good luck with everything!

Alex on 02/15/2017 @ 5:41 am

I think I made a mistake when pointing out the ponytail/pigtail thing, because I didn’t know that a single pigtail can be called a ponytail as well. Oh well, I’m a man, so it’s not unexpected I’m ignorant when it comes to styling. 🙂

He’s triggering the Flee response and Jane can later say she helped! She won’t say that, but still.
Run, run, as fast as you can
I -can- catch you,
TENKA man

Stellar Jay on 02/17/2017 @ 12:34 am

Many predators have their pursuit response triggered by their prey’s flee response. That must be why Jane took of after the Dude.

Kaiden on 02/14/2017 @ 6:25 am

I love how Bandit keeps up the show in these recent pages, while juggling the whispers and actual management of the team.

Christopher on 02/14/2017 @ 6:35 am

Oh, new comment system.
So there is actually a requirement to “scream and run” in order to trigger this? That would explain why that portal is not that well known. Nobody BUT the dude would be likely to do that…

Flynn on 02/14/2017 @ 4:24 pm

Or it’s The Dude’s special at work when he flees.

Justin on 02/14/2017 @ 7:44 am

So it looks like everyone that said he was secretly well acquainted with the game and just playing the Jester was proven right. Please accept this complementary thumbs up for your trouble 😀

Leo Orionis on 02/15/2017 @ 6:42 pm

Well, that’s different! I’ve seen people use “complimentary” when they meant “complementary” lots of times, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen the reverse.

A.T. on 02/14/2017 @ 12:22 pm

Where are Esones found?

Silly thoughts on 02/14/2017 @ 2:12 pm

Quests, players, floating islands may have one, cities will have at least had one. Anywhere Gravity is screwy in comparison to land arounded may have one. Dungeons will likely have them as possible rewards? They’re rare but they’re no unobtainium or key of the twilight.

They will get new ones eventually they just have to work for it.

Feartheswans on 02/14/2017 @ 12:44 pm

That actually makes sense. If the portal is triggered as an escape portal then one would need to be in the state of Flee to open it. It would actually make sense for it to open this way.

Is screaming part of the escape mechanic though or is it just part of The Dude’s Aesthetic?

Ally! on 02/14/2017 @ 12:57 pm

OOH! New comment section! More whispering! Today is so exciting!

AeroQC on 02/14/2017 @ 2:19 pm

A “Flee Response”…
That’s pretty cool actually. The Game reacts to the actions of the players in more than just their physical interactions.

Kaliope on 02/14/2017 @ 9:04 pm

Hey, Aneeka, I’m not sure what happened/is happening with the Kickstarter merch, but I just wanted to ask. Like I said, I am ENTIRELY unaware, but it seems that my stuff has not arrived yet. I was just wondering if this is just a problem for me, multiple people, or you have actually delayed something. Please, someone reply so that I can have some small idea of what’s happening. Thanks!

Aneeka on 02/14/2017 @ 9:30 pm

Shipping has been delayed until March. See this post for more info.

Also, neither your comment name or email address link to anybody in the Kickstarter so I have no idea what your order’s status could be. Email me your Kickstarter name/email addy if you want a more personalized answer.

Alex on 02/15/2017 @ 9:18 am

Oh my, the books fell apart, because the book binders didn’t know how to bind the books properly? That’s so weird I can’t help but think of Tavk. What bargain did you make with him? Insomnia?
And you still aim for your 3rd novel’s beta to come out in April? Now that’s a challenge your chaos god would definitely find entertaining. 🙂 You can handle it.

Kaliope on 02/15/2017 @ 8:34 pm

Oh okay, I see about the books.

The only other thing is that I have not received any of the other merch I ordered. It says on that post that you did send out the stuff, so should I be worried?

If I recall correctly, in those categories I ordered a poster, pins, and bookmarks (I think that’s what I did).

Craig Rawe on 02/16/2017 @ 6:41 am

didnt the post say she only shiped merch to folks who didnt order the books. Dont worry, we havent got any of our stuff yet either 😀

Kaliope on 02/16/2017 @ 7:30 pm

Oh okay, glad to know I’m not the only one (:

meerling on 02/14/2017 @ 11:54 pm

So it sounds like the “Flee Response” is some kind of built in command or script that he uses to run away from trouble.
Why would someone use something like that instead of controlling their own character? My guess is, if I’m right, is that it has some kind of bonus. Maybe higher movement rate, or increased evasion.
Just a wild guess, but why not ? 🙂
