That last panel…center of gravity again?

The Sentinel on 10/11/2016 @ 9:23 am

I think more like there’s an irrational corner of Kleya’s mind that can’t let go of the idea that maybe that kick wasn’t a blind reflex, amplified by her MASSIVE guilt complex.

Chiu ChunLing on 10/11/2016 @ 8:43 pm

More probably, Kat is merely realizing that sneaking up behind Danni without warning was foolish. She can probably see the stats on that kick, and it is definitely enough to seriously endanger someone who has no extra lives remaining.

And they still don’t have access to any healing options.

Sonja Nachtbringer on 10/12/2016 @ 5:28 pm

Well, hopefully Kat won’t take damage from falling backwards…

Kaliope on 10/12/2016 @ 7:38 pm

If she fell on the ground, she would probably take some damage… (unless her hack reflex had something to say about it)

Reo on 10/11/2016 @ 2:21 am

Danni wants to lower her morto rating, it seems.

Kaliope on 10/11/2016 @ 4:29 pm

Didn’t she change to Kesti though

Chiu ChunLing on 10/11/2016 @ 8:36 pm

She’s trying, but she didn’t even get to the quest NPC in the tutorial, meaning her Kesti percentage is probably starting from lower than anyone but Jane (who deliberately murderized the quest NPC). But her Morto rating was nothing special either, and she’s probably dropped a few points by non-lethally attacking half a dozen characters since starting play.

Still, she’s only completed one quest and undertaken another. I’d guess that a quest counts for more Kesti than several kills count for Morto, but I doubt she’s Kesti just yet.

Jarod Leutri on 10/11/2016 @ 9:34 pm

If I remember correctly the game tracks % for all the alignments, so she still has a Morto rating. In fact I think she is still considered a Morto, at least until her Kesti gets higher.

star2wars3 on 10/11/2016 @ 5:53 am

That was a close call. Good Thing Kat has quick reflexes.

Chiu ChunLing on 10/11/2016 @ 8:25 pm

Along with her ultra-low latency alerts.

It occurs to me that the game was most likely designed with a mechanism to ensure client-side connections all had similar latency, which would affect a lot of things in such an immersive game. One can posit that overall latency is lower in this setting, particularly with the dramatic reduction in user traffic relative to surviving communication infrastructure (if we’re talking about a lot of underground cables and such), but there are limits absent FTL tech. But it should still be noticeable compared to human reaction time, especially for a relatively young ballerina. Kat may be fast, but her alert system probably cuts her reaction times in half at least.

Tyler on 10/12/2016 @ 7:02 am

I wouldn’t be surprised if she has developed “override” safety triggers to take over her character to further increase her reaction time. Think how newer cars now have breaking systems that detects when the car in front of you is stopping and slows down automatically for you.

Chiu ChunLing on 10/12/2016 @ 10:24 am

That seems probable too, the floating in air aspect of her cybernetic enhancement suggests it has a lot of interesting abilities. There is the whole question of the degree to which Kleya even is the same person without her interface, and obviously the nature of the interface itself replaces some skills.

Tyler on 10/11/2016 @ 8:11 am

It seems Kat has *conveniently* left Jane by her self with Bandit and Dude… If something were to happen it wouldn’t hurt her alignment further…

Kaliope on 10/13/2016 @ 6:22 pm

That is convenient… although she definitely wouldn’t kill Bandit (because, storyline) and also, I feel like killing off Dude also wouldn’t be good for the story. Also, Jane wouldn’t want to make TENka mad: she’s following orders and playing the game because she wants to keep her kids safe

Christopher on 10/11/2016 @ 8:13 am

I guess Kat did not see how Danni kicked The Dude into a Tree beforehand.
Otherwise she would have known better then to get that close.

BetaKi on 10/11/2016 @ 9:02 am

oops.

Caryn on 10/11/2016 @ 10:29 am

Can’t stop laughing!

If this doesn’t improve Danni’s popularity, I don’t know what will. 🙂

Sandman366 on 10/11/2016 @ 10:32 am

Bad news, Danni! One of the biggest random encounters possible.
Only it wasn’t so random.
And it wants to be friendly.
And you just attacked it.
And they may have just had a slight case of (Wannabe) Heroic BSOD.

…..this is going to get awkward, isn’t it?

Ionbound on 10/11/2016 @ 11:12 am

Five bucks says that Jane got to Danni first and gave her a quest to kill the first thing that she sees.

Chiu ChunLing on 10/11/2016 @ 12:06 pm

That seems highly improbable. I do not believe that Jane would offer Danni a quest or that Jane would accept it, given their relationship thus far. It would also be far too “Chessmaster” an approach for Jane to plan this.

But as long as we’re betting worthless scraps of soiled paper….

Ugh, I don’t even want to win that bet.

Crysta Bedard on 10/11/2016 @ 1:00 pm

OH NO. Don’t say that. Also technically she hasn’t seen Kat yet so she might be okay. Maybe.

Marscaleb on 10/11/2016 @ 1:17 pm

Danni and Chuck Norris: never let yourself get close enough for a roundhouse kick.

Dark on 10/11/2016 @ 4:48 pm

There is, of course, one exception.

Nikary Flare on 10/11/2016 @ 2:08 pm

Danni’s first reaction to everything that startles her.

Kaliope on 10/11/2016 @ 4:28 pm

But why does Danni cover her ears in Panel 4?

Mekronid on 10/11/2016 @ 7:47 pm

“Protect head” reflex. She’s scared.

Chiu ChunLing on 10/11/2016 @ 8:08 pm

That’s kinda a standard startle reflex. For the perfectly good reason that it gives you a chance at deflecting impacts that might otherwise hit your head.

Though it’s possible Danni has some more specific reason.

Ktrimbach on 10/11/2016 @ 9:00 pm

I wonder if she sees something rare or useful up in the trees.

Tyler on 10/12/2016 @ 7:04 am

Doubtful, the way Kat’s notification system works she doesn’t have to “look” to see it. She would have already been notified of its presence the moment she got within range.

Uforia on 10/11/2016 @ 11:57 pm

Wanted something easy to kill… got Kat…
Yeah, Danni really doesn’t have any luck.

Tinker on 10/13/2016 @ 12:50 pm

So, I started reading your comic at seven thirty last night. I couldn’t put them down till two this morning. I then picked them back up at six thirty this morning, and finished them at two forty five this afternoon. That said, I did the same thing when I discovered Red Vs Blue, the Series of Unfortunate Events, and Hellsing Ultimate. Your comics improved fast, and the pace escalated quickly. Like just shy of the line where Madoka Magicka was jarring. This was awesome and I look forward to seeing more.
P. S. I typed this all on my phone, with clumsy large fingers, and all, as I am compelled to compliment you on this.
