If you’re not that keen on drawing people from a vertical viewpoint, you could just go for the plausible in-VR explanation: it’s a map view in which, for the sake of easy interpretation, Users are simply represented by stylised circles. This also provides explanations for why only the major characters are coloured – to highlight your friends and immediate interactions – and for the lack of perspective or ceiling limits in the vertical shots.

Ooo, me like! I may just use that… though I should still really learn how to draw perspective… lol.
